Windows 11 update failures are becoming a joke – but it seems Microsoft is working hard to fix them

Windows 11 was hit by a whole bunch of bugs lately, with the move to the 24H2 version, as you’ve probably noticed – but the most positive news is that Microsoft is busy fixing quite a few of these gremlins in progress.

We have proof of this thanks to the latest preliminary version of Windows 11 sent to the Dev channel, namely build 26120.2213.

Microsoft lists work in progress for bug fixes in the usual way blog postand while there are plenty of problems to solve, some of them are more mundane – so let’s pick out a few of the highlights.

A notable a bug we recently reported affected Task Managerwhich shows that there are no applications or processes running on the host PC – which, of course, can never happen (otherwise Windows 11 itself wouldn’t work, let alone) . Microsoft informs us that it has fixed this issue where Task Manager claims a zero count for running processes.

On top of that, an “underlying issue” with the most recent 24H2 preview that meant some games failed to launch has been resolved here.

Several bugs with the Windows 11 Start menu were fixed with build 26120, including one where users saw large spacing between apps present in the menu’s list of apps. There’s also a general fix for an issue “affecting Start Menu reliability,” we’re told.

There is a similar issue with File Explorer where items in the Navigation Pane were also becoming too spread out, with too much spacing between them for some users, and this has also been fixed. A more minor issue where RAW images shot in portrait mode were displayed in landscape mode with File Explorer thumbnails has also been fixed.

Additionally, Microsoft has applied a series of fixes for various minor issues with the taskbar, including an issue where the “X” button closes a taskbar preview window (which appears when you hover over the taskbar). ‘app in the bar) was “It doesn’t work.

Analysis: It’s all about squashing bugs

This preview build of Windows 11 is notable because there’s virtually nothing here in terms of feature additions (just a minor change to the toolbar IME that won’t make any difference for most users).

Almost all of this release is about bugfixing, and aside from that, there are a few known issues reported that haven’t been fixed yet. One of them is bugs with the new gamepad keyboard layout for Windows 11 users, which means it has been removed. been put on ice for the momentand the other is an issue where those using multiple monitors are experiencing corruption of their desktop background (with “large black areas” appearing mysteriously).

Microsoft is still working on fixes for these issues, as well as a few other issues plaguing the latest incarnation of its desktop operating system.
