Katanga murder trial: 10th prosecution witness fails to appear in court

High Court President Justice Isaac Muwata was left with no choice but to adjourn the high-profile murder trial in which five people are accused of being behind the murder of the man Kampala affairs, Henry Katanga.

The court was scheduled to hear testimony from the 10th prosecution witness on Tuesday morning, but was told he had failed to appear.
At around 11:42 a.m., when the court convened, the state’s chief prosecutor, Jonathan Muwaganya, rushed in and said the witness they had scheduled for the day had not responded to their questions. expectations because he had spent a weekend in the village before requesting an adjournment.

“My lord, we would like to apologize for the delays, which will ultimately affect our activities today. The prosecution witness we had scheduled today spent a weekend in the country and he under -estimated the entry into Kampala So, my lord, without going into details, he underestimated the entry into Kampala in the face of the challenges faced, we pray for an adjournment,” Mr. Muwaganya pleaded with the judge.

When the judge tried to find out if it was possible to hear the witness, Mr Muwaganya replied: “Even with his late arrival, when he arrived at the showroom, the salesman was not there. I think we underestimated the fact. that… and yet the store is under lock and key.
Defense lawyers, led by Peter Kabatsi and Macdosman Kabega, had no choice but to grant the state’s request to postpone the proceedings overnight (November 6).

“The case is adjourned until tomorrow (Wednesday), the bail of the accused is extended until then,” the judge briefly indicated.
The prosecution has not released details of its next witness.

On November 2, 2023, Mr. Katanga was found dead at his residence in Mbuya, near Kampala, following what appears to be a domestic fight with his wife Molly Katanga.

His wife was rushed to a nearby hospital after suffering deep head injuries, but was later arrested and charged with her husband’s murder.

She has since denied the accusations.

She is jointly charged with her two daughters Patricia Kakwanza and Martha Nkwanzi, who face lesser charges of destruction of evidence and complicity after murder.
Also charged are Charles Otai, a doctor at the Bugolobi medical center, and George Amanyire, a former shamba boy at the Katanga residence.
