Check out conservative students on Election Day

Among the students, a majority of Democrats feel comfortable express their opinions without fear of negative consequences, while less than half of Republicans feel this.

Virginia King, freshman at Texas State University Dallastold me about the peer pressure conservative students face on campus.

“Being a conservative on campus during an election period is isolating and distressing,” she said. “As usual, flyers from the conservative chapter of the Enlightened Women’s Network are removed by students about a day after being posted. I have noticed that students on the left are more intolerant of opposing political views than those on the right.

During an election year, the campus environment often deteriorates for conservatives. Many students do not hesitate to put pressure on their peers, directly and indirectly.

“Since early voting began, candidate signs have been filling the busiest parts of campus,” King continued. “The Trump-Vance signs installed on campus by the local Republican Party were toppled by students almost immediately after being installed, although the Harris-Walz signs appear to remain intact. I see students confidently wearing Harris-Walz products on campus, but I have never seen students wear MAGA hats or products due to the negative reactions one might receive, and I have Heard complaints from conservative peers about double standards. I wish my left-leaning peers would treat conservative students with the same respect we show them.

And it’s from a school in Texas.

Election years make campuses even more polarized, and that polarization can peak on Election Day or in the few days afterward when students must accept the election results. After former President Donald Trump’s victory in 2016, Cornell University students held a “cry in” on hot chocolate, blankets and tissues.

In addition to the daily stress of any student, conservative students may face ostracism from their peers and professors.

In the 2022 midterm elections, federal Democratic candidates and causes received 96% of donations from Ivy League professors. Among faculty donations from Sen. JD Vance’s (R-OH) alma mater, Ohio State University, between January 1, 2023 and October 19, 2024, 99% were given to Democrats.

While some professors promote an educational environment favorable to intellectual diversity, others use their platform to attack Republicans. University of Kansas instructor placed on administrative leave after saying on men who won’t vote for a woman president: “We can line these guys up and shoot them; they clearly don’t understand the way the world works.
