Eugene Mirman brings his ‘mild grievances’ to Milwaukee on Thursday

Comedian Eugene Mirman has a list of grievances, and they are mild at best.

That being said, the comedian, actor and writer is currently on tour for these grievances, and he will stop in Milwaukee at the Vivarium on Thursday evening to air them. Before the show, we caught up with Mirman, who many may know as the voice of Gene in “Bob’s Burgers,” to talk about touring, the multiple avenues of comedy he can explore and, of course, the regulations of parking on the East Side. :

“An Evening of Fantasy and Light Grievances” comes to the Vivarium on November 7. I know you’ve been fighting for years, but how often do you travel to this part of the country?

I’ve been to Milwaukee a few times, but I haven’t been in a while, which is one of the reasons I wanted to go, because I really enjoy Milwaukee and I love the Midwest. I have performed at many venues over the years with various friends and am excited to return.

I’m sure many fans will know you as the voice of Gene from “Bob’s Burgers.” Do you get a lot of that from the crowd? Do people ask specific things about “Bob’s Burgers”?

People don’t ask for it as much as you might think. I mean, my voice is the voice I do on the show. Afterwards, sometimes people tell me they like the show or talk about it, but I find that a lot of people who like “Bob’s” often come out and say, “Oh, that’s it.” as if Gene were 50 years old.

Does your personality come through in the character? Are you at home tinkering with beats and sampling things?

I wish I could play music. I always think about it. For example, last year I took piano lessons, but I can’t play music. But I love it and I love tinkering with gadgets. So Gene is probably a lot more musical than me. But the spirit of gadgets and DIY exists in both of us.

Let’s talk about “mild grievances”. Without giving too much away, what kinds of things should we expect to hear you cry about on stage at the Vivarium?

Stupid things have happened to me before. I once got a ticket for parking in the wrong direction in New Hampshire. Then I took out a full page ad in their summer guide, criticizing them because there was no sign saying you can’t park in a garage facing out. This is an example of what I would describe as a mild grievance. Something that is both false, and there would also be no way of knowing that it was false.

Well, parking is a little tight on the east side of Milwaukee. Just for the record, I’d watch out for the signs I guess.

My announcement was both fair and polite. I will not advertise on OnMilwaukee, assuming Milwaukee’s rules are clear and fair.

It is of course up to your passenger to make sure all parking rules are correct, right?

Yes. Sparkling water, chewing gum… uh, avocado? And make sure your city’s street signs are clear and easily readable.

Okay, we can do this for you. Are you working on this hour of stand-up with the intention of eventually working on a new special, or is it strictly for the tour?

Both. You know, in general I love touring, but yeah, hopefully I’m working on some new material and eventually I’ll record it as a special new album, maybe sometime next year ?

Is doing stand-up some kind of escape from acting or “Bob’s”? Do you feel like you have the right to be more yourself?

I don’t know. I think one of the things that’s so fun about comedy is that you get to work on so many different things. So I love doing stand-up or acting because with “Bob’s,” we record at the same time and we record together, and we can collaborate and improvise, and it’s really fun. But you also have to travel, go to different cities and do stand-up, that’s how I started. So I don’t think anything is really an escape from anything else. It’s more that I really like variety.

Well, we look forward to seeing you when you come to Milwaukee. Is there anything in particular in Wisconsin that they should have prepared for you when you visit?

Um…do cheese curds count?

Absolutely.

Oh, so yeah. I would probably say some sort of local smoked fish and cheese curds. And make sure your parking signs are up to date.

Eugene Mirman plays at the Vivarium Thursday evening. Tickets are currently available via Pabst Theater Group Website.
