Valerie Bertinelli and Boyfriend Mike Goodnough Split (Exclusive)

“They are no longer a couple,” a source told PEOPLE.

Bertinelli and Goodnough had been dating since January. (Bertinelli lives in Los Angeles and Goodnough is based on the East Coast.) The actress told PEOPLE in July that maintaining their three week rule had “been a challenge”.

Goodnough tells PEOPLE, “Valerie and I are the only two people who have any insight into our relationship. Neither of us pays much attention to outside chatter.”

Bertinelli spoke about Goodnough for the first time in an April PEOPLE cover story. She said they became friends when he commented on one of her Instagram posts a few years ago.

“I thought he was interesting,” she said. “It was strictly platonic, but there was something about him that I connected with that felt familiar. A level of comfort. He felt like a kindred spirit.

They first spoke on the phone in January and things started to get heated. “His voice had the most beautiful timbre. I was like, ‘Oh, I can’t talk to this man right now because he’s really hot.’ We both had very strong feelings, trying not to admit them,” she said.

The couple quietly went public on April 3 when the Treat yourself the author of the cookbook intervened out for a film shoot The Drew Barrymore Show with him by her side. Goodnough spoke about their relationship for the first time shortly after.

“I’m Valérie Bertinelli’s boyfriend…and that might be one of the most surreal sentences I’ve ever said. But it’s true…and nothing about our current relationship feels surreal. This just seems…well…lucky…a gift,” he wrote on his Substack called Hoarse whispers.

Since then, Bertinelli has sung his praises on social media, and they even made their red carpet debut at the Daytime Emmys in June.

During her PEOPLE cover interview in April, Bertinelli said they “never go more than” three weeks “without seeing each other.” But in a July interview with PEOPLE, she said it has “been difficult” to keep up. “Summer is full. It’s a challenge,” she added.

After being so open about her new love at first, Bertinelli said she wanted to keep her relationship more private moving forward.

“Part of me is like it’s so public and now I’m trying to pull back and make it a lot less public, and trying to keep some things to ourselves now,” she told PEOPLE . “It’s like, ‘Oh, but yeah, I let the cat out of the bag.’ I don’t know. I’d like to start keeping it between us and make it a little more special.

“Even though I’ve been very public about it, now part of me just wants to protect myself,” she said, adding that her boyfriend is “great.”

Bertinelli was married has financial planner Tom Vitale from 2011 to 2022, and before that she was married to the Van Halen frontman Eddie Van Halen from 1981 to 2007.

She has was candid about her breakups in the past, sharing words of wisdom on social media.

“When something is toxic, and it never has been… Do your best to heal your way back to indifference,” she wrote on her Instagram Story in March 2023, after her divorce. “You don’t need to forgive to move on.”

Throughout her relationship with Goodnough, she shared the positive influence he had on her self-healing journey.

“Learning to trust again after losing that trust is not an easy thing. These demons want to protect you from being vulnerable and emotionally exposed again,” she said in a June 2024 Instagram post. “This man is worth fighting the rest of my demons over. He is the most caring, kind, sweet, intelligent, funny and grateful man I have ever met.
