CINCINNATI, Ohio – Vice presidential candidate JD Vancestanding outside the Cincinnati church where he voted Tuesday, called on voters to “get this election across the finish line.”

Vance voted Tuesday morning at St. Anthony of Padua, a Catholic church in Cincinnati’s East Walnut Hills neighborhood, where he has owned a house since 2018. The Republican The Ohio senator is a native of Middletown, Ohio, located approximately 40 miles to the north.

Vance was joined by his wife, Usha Vanceand their three young children.

“Of course I voted for Donald Trump and myself and my wife,” he told reporters after the vote. Vance said he and his wife also voted for Republican Bernie Moreno, who is running to defeat Ohio U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown.

“I feel good,” he said of the presidential race. “You never know until you know, but I feel good about this race. I felt good about my own (Senate) race a few years ago when I voted in the exact same place. I hope this will work out just as well for President Trump and me, as it did a few years ago in Ohio.

Vance won’t speculate on who he’d like to take his Senate seat if he wins, saying he’s “too superstitious to talk about these things.”

The senator said he did not speak with Trump on Tuesday, but missed a call from the former president around 3 a.m.

“I think what today represents is an opportunity to repay a debt that I owe to this country,” Vance said when asked how it felt to vote for himself for vice president near his hometown.

“If I’m vice president, I’m going to work as hard as I can to pay off that debt. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay what this country has given me, but I’m going to try. But we have to ‘first win.

Vance also spoke about increased polarization and the need for people to come together after the election, regardless of the outcome.

“My most important message is that we need to discuss, disagree, persuade each other about politics. It’s part of the natural process. But we can’t abandon our friends, or our family members,” he declared. “I have a few friends who put their friendship aside because I decided I wanted Donald J. Trump to be the winner of the last election and this election. I think it’s a tragedy.”

Polls between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris were still thin on Tuesday.

“We’re very pleased with the energy and the early voting, but ultimately the ball is in the American people’s court,” Vance said. “Today is the big day. If you don’t want an open border, vote for Donald Trump. If you want to return to low inflation and affordable food, vote for Donald Trump. If you want to bring back the world to peace and stability, vote for Donald Trump.
