Maricopa County officials say election results will take some time

PHOENIX (AZFamille) — The Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center (MCTEC) is a hub of activity Tuesday for Election Day, and it will likely remain so for the better part of two weeks.

The MCTEC is where ballots are counted for the county. Officials say this year they will have to wait for the results.

Maricopa County Clerk Stephen Richer said the vote counting process would take 10 to 14 days. The schedule is consistent with previous election cycles.

Inside the buildingbipartisan teams made up of Republicans, Democrats and independents are working overtime to process all the ballots. Richer said about 100 people are working at all times.

Teams are responsible for removing the two-page ballot from its envelope and checking that it is not damaged and that both pages are there.

As of Monday afternoon, approximately 1.4 million ballots had been signature verified in Maricopa County. That’s nearly 2.6 million registered voters in the county.

Polling stations close on Tuesday at 7 p.m. It is important to note that voters who are in line at 7 p.m. will still be allowed to vote.

The county’s first results are expected at 8 p.m. Early results will include approximately 70-75% of the early ballots received so far.

Additional results will be reported throughout the night, and these will include in-person votes that will be tabulated at voting centers.

It is possible that some of the candidates and ballot measures in the lead on election night may not maintain that lead after Election Day as additional ballots are counted and reported.

Due to changing demographics, Arizona is no longer a reliably red state. The races are extremely close, so it will likely take days for races to be announced, even as the countdown continues.

Richer said one of the main reasons for the delay in counting was “late” early ballots, meaning mail-in ballots cast in person on or just before Election Day.
