These are the two most successful teams in the history of the Champions League.

Real Madrid’s status as king of the continent is well established. They have won a remarkable 14 European Cups, double the number of second-best AC Milan. There has never been a time when Madrid haven’t topped the list of all-time triumphs.

Their last taste of glory was just a few months ago, when Madrid put Borussia Dortmund to the sword at Wembley Stadium.

Milan, on the other hand, have not lifted the famous trophy since 2007. They are unlikely to end that drought this season.

Of course, nothing can be completely ruled out. Their cross-city rivals Inter were runners-up in 2023, while few expected Dortmund to make the final last time out. This is a knockout competition and the teams that make up the annual showpiece are not necessarily the strongest duo in Europe.

Still, it’s fair to say Milan have more modest ambitions as we head into day four of the revamped tournament.

They started with a 3-1 home defeat against Liverpool, before being edged out by a goal to nil from Bayer Leverkusen.

Milan recovered to beat Club Brugge last time out, but the difficulty of Tuesday’s assignment means they could easily find themselves with three points halfway through the league stage.

The fixtures become easier on paper thereafter, with Slovan Bratislava, Red Star Belgrade, Girona and Dinamo Zagreb scheduled to face opposition in their final four matches. But Paulo Fonseca’s men must take nothing for granted.

The same goes for Madrid ahead of Milan’s visit to the Spanish capital. Carlo Ancelotti’s men had a weekend off after their planned encounter against Valencia was canceled due to extreme flooding in that part of Spain.

THE Whites So it should be relatively fresh, but their last outing at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu saw them crushed 4-0 by Barcelona. Needless to say, Milan would be quite pleased with a closer victory than that.

There are genuine doubts over whether Real Madrid have the right balance in the squad to win the biggest trophies this season.

Sometimes the Whites lacked cohesion and fluidity. That hasn’t necessarily stopped previous Madrid teams from going all the way in Europe, but at the moment they look a little top-heavy.

On the other hand, there will be times when Madrid’s phenomenal firepower in the final third simply blows away their opponents, as they did in that 5-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.

It will likely be a closer encounter than that, but AC Milan’s defense will be tested throughout the 90 minutes.
