Lawyers on both sides of Karen Read’s case have asked that her retrial be delayed for three months, as prosecutors say they want to reexamine evidence and prepare to call new witnesses.

Read, 44, is must be judged a second time in the case, accusing her of drunkenly ramming his SUV into her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, in January 2022 and leaving him to die in the snow.

His new trial is scheduled for January 27 after the first. ended with a hung jury during the summer.

However, on Monday, prosecutors filed a motion — with Read’s consent — asking Norfolk County Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone to postpone the retrial until April 1.

Special Assistant Prosecutor Hank Brennan said in the two-page filing that the office plans to “re-test the forensic evidence” and call new expert witnesses “who did not testify at the first trial” – which will take time to prepare.

Read’s team said it would then “need time to review and potentially respond” “possibly with its own additional experts,” the filing said.

Cannone still has to approve the postponement request – which she likely will given that both sides have agreed to it.

Read faces charges of second-degree murder, leaving the scene of a death and manslaughter in O’Keefe’s killing – for which she has adamantly maintained her innocence.

The trial ended July 1 with a deadlocked jury in the case that brought together a group of supporters of Read’s innocence.

Read’s lawyers told the jury that their client was the victim of a law enforcement cover-up designed to hide that O’Keefe had in fact been killed in a fight with his police buddies after Read l was filed at Police Officer Brian’s home in Canton, Massachusetts. Albert.

Judge Cannone rejected Read’s request to dismiss counts of murder and leaving the scene of a death on the grounds that several jurors would have manifested to the defense team, saying they truly intended to acquit Read of the charges.

The prosecutor’s office and Read’s attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday morning.
