Digital life certificates: SBI issues warning ahead of annual life certificate submission deadline

Jeevan Pramaan Patra: The Annual Life Certificate, or Jeevan Pramaan Patra, is a major requirement for retirees to confirm that they are alive and continuing to receive their retirement benefits. All pensioners must submit a ‘Life Certificate’ or ‘Jeevan Pramaan Patra’ in November to receive their monthly pension from the government. The window for submission of life certificates or ‘Jeevan Pramaan Patra’ opened on November 1 and will close on November 30.

Amid the annual rush to submit life certificates, the State Bank of India has issued a warning to pensioners over possible fraudulent calls. The bank warned against any calls from people posing as pension agents and asking for personal information.

Fraudsters can pose as representatives of pension funds and falsely claim to have access to personal information such as pension payment orders, bank account information, PAN numbers and Aad numbers.

The bank warned that fraudsters may also request OTP numbers, which can result in theft from the individual’s account if shared. It is crucial that retirees remain vigilant and avoid disclosing personal information to unknown callers.

The bank said: “Please report any suspected fraudulent communications by visiting this link: Call 1930 or visit to report any financial fraud. »

Fraud APK

Recently, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) issued a warning about a fraudulent message circulating about an app called ‘SBI rewards’ which is part of a scam to deceive users.

PIB clarified that State Bank of India (SBI) does not send links or APK files via SMS or WhatsApp for redemption of rewards. It is crucial to avoid downloading unknown files or clicking on suspicious links. In the Android ecosystem, users can install third-party mobile apps from the Play Store, which can cause hackers to exploit users’ devices by tricking them into installing APK files or creating Trojans for legitimate apps.

SBI posted on social media Please note that SBI will never share unsolicited links or APKs via SMS or Whatsapp. Do not click on such links or download unknown files.

How APK fraud takes place

According to the AU Small Finance Bank website, the APK fraud process typically involves the following steps:

Luring victims: Hackers start by persuading individuals to install malicious APKs on their smartphones. This may involve the use of social engineering techniques to trick victims into downloading harmful applications.

Installation Process: Once the victim clicks on the APK file, they may encounter several warning messages warning them about the risks of installing apps from unknown sources. Additionally, the victim may notice that the app asks for an unusually high number of permissions, such as access to camera, microphone, location, contacts, SMS, etc.

Grant access: Once the installation is complete, the hacker takes control of the infected device by establishing a connection from their own hacking device. This access allows the hacker to execute malicious actions on the compromised device.

Safety Precautions

To protect your device from APK file scams, follow the following crucial guidelines:

> Avoid unsecured networks: Avoid using unsecured Wi-Fi or public networks for sensitive transactions or downloads, as hackers frequently exploit these networks to intercept data.

> Exercise caution with third-party apps: Avoid downloading APK files from unknown sources, especially if prompted by an unsolicited call or message. Stick to reputable sources.

> Install antivirus software: Use reliable antivirus software to identify and prevent malicious files. Make sure to update the software regularly to defend against new threats. Many antivirus applications offer the ability to scan APK files before installation.
