Vermont re-elects Bernie Sanders but also re-elects its anti-Trump Republican governor

ABC News predicts that independent Sen. Bernie Sanders won re-election in Vermont, and Republican Gov. Phil Scott won re-election.

Sanders sits to the left of most Democrats in the Senate (but is part of that party’s caucus), so it’s fascinating to see such a divided result in one of the most optimistic states in the country. However, Scott is incredibly popular and is one of the only prominent Republicans still in office who has turned against Trump – so much so that he said he voted for Harris in the presidential election.

First mixed figures in Georgia

Georgia is one of the seven most important swing states in this presidential election, and early results there don’t reveal much about where it might go. Today, Trump leads with about 60% to Harris’s 40%, with just 9% of the state’s expected votes.

But notably, the two metro Atlanta-area counties that reported at least 70% of their expected votes are both significantly bluer than they were in 2020, while many other more rural counties in the The states that reported as much are significantly redder.

Still, about three-quarters of votes in Georgia so far are estimated to have taken place in person or by mail, which should be at least somewhat more favorable to Democrats than Election Day votes. However, the extent of this partisan divide in preferred voting method – so apparent in 2020 – remains to be seen.

Will Indiana or Missouri elect its first female governor?

Eighteen states have never had a female governor. Tonight, two Democratic candidates could emerge from the drought that is hitting their states: Jennifer McCormick in Indiana and Crystal Quade in Missouri. But since these two states are in red, this remains unlikely.

Currently, more women than ever are simultaneously serving as governor. It’s just 12 o’clock.
