Works Ministry identifies 1,577 high-risk tracks in Malaysia – RM104.84 million in repair works in September

The Ministry of Public Works (KKR) said a total of 1,577 slopes along federal roads across the country have been identified as high risk. Bernama reports.

These high-risk tracks are among the 34,714 tracks monitored via the slope risk and hazard map developed by the Public Works Department (JKR), which includes 26,722 tracks in Peninsular Malaysia, 4,178 tracks in Sabah, 3,633 tracks in Sarawak and 181 tracks in Sarawak. Labuan.

The ministry added that in the event of a slope-related disaster, it will provide technical advice to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) through JKR, while also providing machinery and technical services, in assessing damage to public infrastructure and implementing mitigation measures to reduce the slope. disaster risks.

“If a disaster involves river crossings or landslidesJKR will take several measures, including closing roads, issuing warnings, providing alternative routes, constructing diversions and repairing affected roads. In addition, JKR, through its slope engineering arm, issues early warnings based on precipitation and slope movement data from the Early Warning System in high-risk areas,” said the ministry in a press release to the media.

There are also 49 rainfall stations across the country – 37 in Peninsular Malaysia, nine in Sabah and three in Sarawak – to record rainfall data and issue early warnings when values exceed thresholds in high-risk locations. “Three robotic total stations (RTS) and one global navigation satellite system (GNSS) were also installed in sections 44 and 46 of FT185 Jalan Simpang Pulai-Lojing-Gua Musang to monitor the movement of the slope surface,” added the ministry.

In terms of expenditure, RM104.84 million was used for slope repair works at 147 sites along federal roads in Peninsular Malaysia as of September this year. For 2025, RM118 million has been allocated to the ministry to support remedial slope repairs and preventative maintenance.

“At the same time, routine maintenance is underway on very high-risk slopes on the east coast, including in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and parts of Perak. In addition, the installation and maintenance of the landslide early warning system and the upgrade of the integrated slope management system are underway,” the statement said.

The ministry will also deploy technologies such as tilt sensors, soil moisture sensors, inclinometers and piezometers in high-risk locations for more accurate real-time data collection and enable the establishment of precise preventive measures to reduce landslide incidents.
