Immigrants and refugees have much to fear from a Trump victory

Concerning “With immigrants, elections are too personal: many fear being separated, sent back» (Page A1, October 30): The Trump campaign’s attacks on “illegal” immigrants have impacts far beyond the undocumented immigrant community. At the International Institute of New England, we support refugees and immigrants who have entered the United States legally after fleeing unimaginable dangers; they seek nothing other than security and contributing to the country that welcomed them.

Every day, our staff, more than half of whom are immigrants themselves, performs the impossible task of communicating to families the ever-changing immigration policies that affect their survival and that could become much crueler under a second Trump administration. Donald Trump. Our clients are deeply concerned that the xenophobic policies proposed by the Trump campaign will strip them of their legal status and that if he wins this election, they risk being deported, persecuted, violent and even killed during a forced return to their country of origin.

Many customers are already facing this reality due to the Biden administration’s recent decision not to renew the CHNV Parole Program, a policy under which Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan migrants could stay temporarily and legally in this country. Meanwhile, our foreign-born employees, many of whom arrived as refugees and some of whom are themselves on humanitarian parole, also fear for themselves and their families.

The Trump campaign’s blatant racism was further exposed at the October 27 rally at Madison Square Garden, with attacks on the all-American territory of Puerto Rico and direct insults against Kamala Harris’ Jamaican and Indian heritage . The campaign’s demonization of other cultures goes beyond denying the economic and cultural benefits immigrants bring to the United States and communicates pure hatred. This is anathema to who we are and should strive to be as a nation.
