Hero MotoCorp seeks to expand its electric vehicle business, lines up new models

Milan (Italy): Hero MotoCorp is looking to increase its presence in the electric two-wheeler sector as it prepares to introduce affordable models in the coming months, according to a top company executive.

The two-wheeler giant is also looking to strengthen its presence in Europe with plans to enter markets like the UK, France, Spain and Italy next year.

“In the next six months, there will be a lot of action in the product portfolio (in the area of electric vehicles). We will also launch products (under the VIDA range) in the more affordable segments,” said Niranjan Gupta, CEO of Hero MotoCorp. PTI in an interaction here on the sidelines of EICMA.

Hero MotoCorp’s VIDA range of electric scooters currently costs between Rs 1-1.5 lakh, including government subsidies, in India.

The company currently sells the VIDA range in over 230 cities and towns across the country, with over 400 outlets.

Gupta noted that the company has performed well in the electrical segment, having sold 11,600 units during the just-concluded 32-day festive season.

Highlighting the importance of having physical sales and service infrastructure on the ground, he noted that this helps in gaining customer trust.

“There is a physical aspect to customer service that is required. I think as Hero we are present in every nook and corner of the country, and hence we have an advantage there,” Gupta said .

He also emphasized that cost competitiveness also works in the company’s favor.

“So I would say cost and customer service make the difference between winners and losers in the long term (EV space),” he added.

Asked about the overall sales scenario in the domestic market, he said urban centers are doing better and now rural areas are also starting to pick up pace.

“So, I would say there is some positive momentum that can emerge from the rural market as you move forward. We know the monsoon has been good. We know the government has increased the MSP… So, I ” I think all of this, over time, will trickle down in terms of bottom-of-the-pyramid income and employment,” Gupta said.

“So we are seeing green shoots and therefore as we move forward we are seeing a return of positive momentum.” Earlier this week, Hero MotoCorp reported a 13 percent increase in sales during the festive period in India this year, at 15.98 lakh units compared to last year’s period.

The company achieved its highest ever retail sales during the 32-day festive period, starting from Navratri.

On Tuesday, the company announced plans to enter countries including the UK, Italy, Spain and France in the second half of 2025.

The two-wheeler company, headquartered in New Delhi, currently sells its products in 48 countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Gupta said the company can offer ambitious products at affordable prices in these markets.

The company plans to enter the European markets with a new electric scooter – VIDA Z.

It also plans to expand its range to high-end high-capacity internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles.

“We know that because of the economy the way it is, a lot of customers in Europe and the UK are looking at value, price, the value equation now, and that’s that’s where we come in,” he noted.

The company has already recruited exclusive distributors who are familiar with these markets, Gupta said.

“So we will start with Italy, Spain, France and the United Kingdom. And later we will see if we can launch into more markets,” he added.

Gupta said sales performance has started improving in various markets.

“Colombia started to do very well. Today, in fact, we would be very close to a turnaround in results in Colombia and we would also see market share gains there,” he said. he declared.

Additionally, the company will focus on expanding its business in Brazil and Southeast Asia, he said.
