Trump’s victory speech, fact-checked

Donald Trump vowed to “heal” America by declaring victory in the US election, marking a breathtaking political comeback.

Addressing his supporters, the Republican candidate hailed a “magnificent victory for the American people” in sealing his return to the White House – a result that sent shockwaves across the world.

His election as the 47th President of the United States is a hammer blow to the democrats and their candidate Kamala Harris, who had a bitterly disappointing evening as voters overwhelmingly supported Trump.

In a speech addressed to supporters at Palm Beach, FloridaTrump made a number of claims about his first stint in the White House, pledging to fight “with all his might” for every American citizen and to bring about “America’s golden age.” » in a second term.

“Unprecedented mandate”

President-elect Trump said the election gave Republicans a “unprecedented and powerful mandate”. He is on track to win all the swing states that were so crucial in charting the path to the White House.

Trump has now won Pennsylvania, following victories in North Carolina, Georgia and Wisconsin, key states where the race with Harris was hotly contested.

He’s also leading in Nevada, Michigan and Arizona and appears poised to win the popular vote, something he didn’t do in the 2016 race with Hilary Clinton.

Republicans also took control of the Senate and expanded their majority in the House of Representatives.

But while that gives him a clear and resounding mandate, the margins of victory in the Electoral College race have been much greater after previous U.S. elections.

In 1936, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected in the greatest landslide victory in American presidential history. Roosevelt won by 97 percentage points following his New Deal legislation aimed at rebuilding the United States after the Great Depression.

The Democratic candidate won every state except Vermont and Maine, winning 523 electoral votes to Alf Landon’s eight.

In 1984, Ronald Reagan won 525 electoral votes to Democrats’ Walter Mondale’s 13, while in 1972, Richard Nixon won 520 electoral votes to George McGovern’s 17, a margin of victory of 93.5 percentage points.

In his speech to a campaign party in the early hours of Wednesday, Trump said he would “stop wars” as the next US president.

Referring to his previous presidency, he also asserted: “We didn’t have any wars, for four years we didn’t have any wars. Except we defeated ISIS.

It has also launched airstrikes on Syria following chemical weapons attacks, the first of which, in 2017, saw the United States fire 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at an air base.

The following year, Trump ordered further strikes against Syria in retaliation for another suspected chemical weapons attack by President Bashar al-Assad’s regime on a Damascus suburb last week.

He also ordered the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, exacerbating tensions with Tehran.

Trump also claimed that U.S.-backed forces had retaken 100% of territory formerly claimed by ISIS in Syria.

During this year’s presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly claimed that the war in Ukraine and the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 would not have happened if he were still in the White House, but he It is impossible to prove or disprove it.
