US election 2024 – how the night went

Kamala Harris’ path to the White House narrowed as Donald Trump was expected to win two key battlegrounds in the race to become the next US president.

Here’s a timeline of how election night has gone so far.

November 5:

11 p.m. – Closing of the first polling stations in the states of Indiana and Kentucky.

11:30 p.m. – Voting hours have been extended at five polling places in Georgia’s Fulton County, which were briefly closed earlier in the day due to bomb threats deemed not credible.

11:39 p.m. – Donald Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, saying “law enforcement will be coming” to Philadelphia due to “massive cheating” there. Republican Philadelphia City Commissioner Seth Bluestein posted on X saying, “There is absolutely no truth to this allegation. This is yet another example of misinformation. Voting in Philadelphia took place safely.

November 5:

00:00 – Donald Trump planned to win Kentucky, as expected. Polls are wrapping up in South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and the key battleground state of Georgia.

12:05 a.m. – Kamala Harris plans to reclaim the Democratic safe state of Vermont. Donald Trump planned to win Indiana.

12:30 a.m. – Polls close in Ohio, West Virginia and the battleground state of North Carolina. The projected results come almost immediately as Donald Trump takes on West Virginia.

1 a.m. – Polls close in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, along with 16 other states. Donald Trump is expected to win Florida, Alabama, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Kamala Harris is expected to win the District of Columbia, Maryland and Massachusetts.

01:20 – Donald Trump is expected to win in South Carolina.

1:30 a.m. – Donald Trump is expected to win the solidly Republican state of Arkansas.

2 a.m. – North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Texas are expected to be won by Donald Trump. Polls are wrapping up in the battleground states of Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as 15 other states.

2:10 – As expected, Kamala Harris planned to win Delaware. Polls end in the swing state of Michigan.

02:25 – Louisiana should be won by Donald Trump. Kamala Harris is expected to win Rhode Island and New York.

2:40 – Illinois is projected for Kamala Harris.

2:50 a.m. – Polls close in more than 40 of the 50 states.

3 a.m. – Donald Trump is expected to win Montana, Utah and Mississippi. Polls are wrapping up in three more states, including the final battleground of Nevada.

3:10 – Colorado should be won by Kamala Harris.

3:20 – Donald Trump is expected to win Ohio.

3:35 – Projections for Iowa and Kansas as Donald Trump expects to win Midwest states.

4 a.m. – California projected for Kamala Harris and Idaho projected for Donald Trump.

4:10 – Kamala Harris should win Oregon.

4:30 – Kamala Harris should win Washington.

4:40 a.m. – Donald Trump projected to win the battleground state of North Carolina, winning all 16 of its Electoral College votes.

5 a.m. – Hawaii should be won by Kamala Harris.

5:10 – Virginia projected for Kamala Harris.

5:37 – Donald Trump projected to win the battleground state of Georgia, winning all 16 of its Electoral College votes.

5:45 a.m. – A senior Kamala Harris campaign official confirms that the vice president will not speak tonight.

5:55 – Kamala Harris should win New Mexico.

6 a.m. – Polls are now closed across the United States.
