Google blocked political posts on internal discussion forums ahead of Election Day: report

Google reportedly cracked down on political discussions among employees before an election night that ended in Donald Trump’s victory.

The Big Tech giant moderated and deleted election-related posts on an internal discussion forum called Memegen, CNBC reported.

Google had already tightened limits on political discussions in September – and enacted a rule that would ban employees who violated the policy three times.

In a Monday memo, Google CEO Sundar Pichai asked employees to follow the company’s “personal political activity policy” and said its goal was to be a “trusted source of information for people of all backgrounds and beliefs.”

“Whoever voters entrust, let’s remember the role we play at work, through the products we build, and as a company: to be a trusted source of information for people of all backgrounds and beliefs “, wrote Pichai. “We will and must maintain this.”

Some Google employees grew angry at the policy and mocked Google’s internal Community Management Team, or ICMT, which is responsible for moderating Memegen, CNBC reported.

One employee joked, “Make Election Day a holiday to give CIMT a break.” »

Another reportedly complained that Google removed a post that they believed did not violate the ban.

Elsewhere, Google sparked a brief uproar on Election Day after some users noticed its search engine displayed an interactive map of polling locations for a specific search related to Kamala Harris, but not Trump.

Google quickly confirmed the issue and implemented a fix.

Google has reinforced the limits of political debate amid signs of discord within its workforce.

The company went so far as to briefly shut down Memegen last March, as employees attacked Google’s $1.2 billion “Project Nimbus” contract – under which Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services provide cloud computing and artificial intelligence services to the Israeli government and military.

In April, the tech giant fired dozens of employees who participated in anti-Israel sit-ins in offices in New York and California.

In a fiery memo to employees that same month, Pichai said Google “is a business, not a place to act in a way that disrupts or puts colleagues at risk, in an attempt to use the company as a a personal platform, or to fight on disruptive issues or debate policy.

Last month, Alphabet’s workers’ union filed a federal lawsuit accusing Google of imposing a Illegal ‘gag order’ prohibiting employees from discussing ongoing antitrust cases against the company.

A federal judge ruled in August that Google has an illegal monopoly on online search. Closing arguments are expected to take place this month in a separate Justice Department case targeting Google’s digital advertising business.
