Kerala to welcome 10 new Vande Bharat trains; prices from Rs 30 | Travel News

Kollam: Kerala is set to launch 10 new Vande Bharat trains, also known as Namo Bharat, across the state. Known for their comfort and efficiency, these modern, air-conditioned trains are designed for intercity travel at speeds of up to 130 km/h. They are equipped with amenities such as automatic sliding doors and CCTV cameras for enhanced security.

These Vande Bharat trains will provide tourists visiting Kerala with the opportunity to explore the natural beauty and rich culture of the state while traveling across a variety of destinations. The trains, which have revolutionized short-distance travel in India, are known for their speed, modern facilities and eco-friendly electric motors. Their arrival in Kerala promises smoother and faster travel options, which is in line with the state’s commitment to sustainable tourism.

The addition of these services is expected to significantly boost Kerala’s tourism sector. In addition to providing an enhanced travel experience, the trains will improve connectivity to lesser-known destinations, allowing travelers to discover hidden gems across the state.

Key routes and stops
Out of the ten new services, two trains will begin operations from Kollam, heading towards Thirunelveli and Thrissur. Plans are in place to extend the road from Thrissur to the temple town of Guruvayur. Additional routes will connect Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam and Guruvayur to Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

This expanded network is expected to boost local economies, attracting tourists to areas previously off the beaten track and supporting local businesses and services.

Tourism potential for Kollam
Kollam, famous for its coastline, backwaters, hills and forests, is expected to benefit considerably from these new rail services. Railway officials highlighted the tourism potential that the new Vande Bharat routes will bring to the region. In addition to the Kollam-Thrissur and Kollam-Thirunelveli routes, the Guruvayur-Madurai and Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram trains will make brief stopovers at Kollam.

Trains to Thirunelveli and Madurai will take the scenic Kottarakkara-Punalur-Thenmala-Aryankavu route, passing through the historic Kollam-Shenkottai line. This route, whose origins date back to colonial times, takes passengers through dense forests, tunnels and pristine landscapes, providing access to attractions such as Thenmala Dam, Palaruvi Waterfalls and the village of Rosemala.

Infrastructure needs
However, infrastructure limitations at smaller stations remain a challenge, as many cannot currently accommodate Vande Bharat trains. Adding stops at stations like Thenmala could improve tourism in the Thenmala-Aryankavu region. Currently, only MEMUs and passenger trains stop along the Shenkottai route.

Stops at smaller stations for these new trains could support regional development and tourism. Another area with high tourism potential is Manrothuruthu, an island located at the confluence of the Kallada River and the Ashtamudi backwaters.

Located on the Kollam-Kayamkulam railway line, this destination already attracts many visitors, especially international ones. A Vande Bharat stopover here could encourage even more travelers to explore this unique region.

Train design and efficiency
Designed for efficient intercity travel, Namo Bharat trains are similar to metro services, with integrated systems that enable rapid acceleration, high speeds and quick stops. Analyzes have shown that adding stops at smaller stations would have minimal impact on the overall efficiency of these services. Trains are also well suited to distances of 100 to 250 kilometers, providing an efficient option for regional connectivity.

Ticket prices and travel options
Indian Railways has announced fare structures for Vande Bharat trains, with a minimum ticket price of Rs 30, including GST. Subscriptions, ranging from one week to one month, are also available. Monthly tickets offer one trip for the price of 20 single trips, providing added value for frequent travelers. For example, the fare for the Bhuj-Ahmedabad route is priced at Rs 430, excluding GST.

With the support of local representatives, these trains could further increase accessibility to Kollam’s tourist spots, including the picturesque backwaters of Ashtamudi, Sasthamkotta and Paravur, as well as its renowned beaches. The introduction of Vande Bharat trains is expected to significantly boost tourism, providing locals and visitors with expanded travel opportunities across Kerala’s diverse landscapes.
