Winter storm closes some roads in northern Colorado

DENVER – Parts of Interstate 70 and other roads were closed Wednesday due to a winter storm covering the north Colorado in the snow.

Up to 10 inches snow was reported along I-70, which runs through Denver.

This snowfall created unfavorable weather conditions and poor visibility for drivers, leading the Colorado Department to Transportation close parts of the highway and other roads in the Denver area.

“Avoid journey if possible,” the agency posted on X, formerly Twitter.

A Winter weather warning was issued Wednesday morning until 11 p.m. for Denver, its western suburbs and Rock.

The National Weather Service said an additional 2 inches of snow was expected, creating slippery road conditions that could be hazardous for Wednesday evening’s commute.

These conditions prompted the NWS to also issue a hazardous weather report for the next seven days for parts of the Denver-Boulder area.

Wednesday, additional snowfall and gusts from the north winds reaching 40 mph will make travel in areas south of Interstate 76 dangerous, reaching “almost-blizzard conditions at times,” the NWS said. It also warned that wet roads in the Denver area could refreeze and create slippery road conditions.

Up to a foot of additional snow is expected Friday and Saturday, according to the FOX Forecast Center. Much of the heaviest snow will fall from the Palmer Divide and east toward the Plains.
