Maoist killed in shootout with security forces

BERHAMPUR: A Maoist was killed in an encounter with security forces in Sesar-Adangi forest under Baliguda police limits of Kandhamal district on Friday.

According to sources, two SOG teams, engaged in a forest combing operation since October 23, came under fire during the day.

As the teams retaliated, a Maoist believed to be a senior CPI (Maoist) cadre from the Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh division was killed in the gunfight.

Although the identity of the Maoist is yet to be ascertained, the uniform he was wearing at the time of the encounter suggests he could be a high-ranking member of the banned group.

Further searches of the area are underway and more details are awaited, a police officer said. Sources said that for the past few days, KKBN members have been camping in the forest near the villages of Sesar, Dasungia, Aternji, Madanga and Adangi.

“A small group of Maoists opened fire on the SOG teams. As SOG personnel retaliated, an unidentified Maoist was killed,” DIG(SR) Sarthak Sarangi told media in Phulabni.

He said that BSF and CRPF personnel are carrying out operations in the area.

About a week ago, Odisha DGP YB Khurania had visited Kandhamal and Boudh districts to review the Maoist situation. While the DGP highlighted the need to strengthen anti-Maoist operations in Kandhamal, Boudh and Kalahandi districts, he urged the rebels to re-enter the mainstream of society. Khurania congratulated Kandhmal Police, Intelligence Directorate and Operations Headquarters for the day’s achievement.
