Detroit Tigers trade intriguing pitcher for National League powerhouse

What is Detroit Tigers doing this offseason could make headlines.

After seemingly waving the white flag this year by trading veterans at the deadline, promoting top prospects and granting daily playing time to their young stars propelled this team on a magical run that occurred at a victory in the competition for the World Series.

The future looks bright for this Tigers club, but there are still some areas that could be improved.

We’ll see how Detroit’s front office and ownership group proceed this winter or in the future as they could start spending money again or just sit back and allow this roster to grow.

However, they have already made a decision by shipping out one of their bullpen options.

According to the team’s official social media page, they traded reliever Devin Sweet to Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash considerations.

Sweet did not make an appearance for the Tigers last campaign after they claimed him off waivers in January, but during this season where he pitched only with their Triple-A affiliate, he posted a 3.91 ERA over his 52 outings and four starts, striking out 111 batters in 76.0 innings.

The 28-year-old has only made seven Major League outings in his career, all in 2023, including two with the team. Seattle Mariners and five was with the Oakland Athletics.

It’s unclear what role he could have played with Detroit going forward, especially with so many players in their bullpen performing well in high-leverage positions late in the season and during the playoffs.

Moving him for cash compensation that could help them sign someone notable this winter is a smart move if they didn’t think he would be considered next year.
