Voters send historic candidates to Congress

The Congress will host a list of historic legislators in January, as members of both parties took first place in the House and Senate.

Several candidates are ready to become the first women to represent their state in Washington, D.C.while others will become the first of their inheritance.

Lisa Blunt Rochester, Delaware Senate race

With her victory over Republican Eric Hansen, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) will become the first Black woman to serve as Delaware senator.

Blunt Rochester will succeed longtime Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE), who chose not to seek re-election in 2024 and supported her almost immediately. Blunt Rochester was once his intern.

Angela Alsobrooks, Maryland Senate race

Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks defeated former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday night, becoming the first Black woman to represent Maryland.

Alsobrooks and Blunt Rochester will be the fourth and fifth Black women to serve in the Upper House, behind Vice President Kamala Harris, the late Democratic Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-CA).

Their victories also mark the first time in history that two black women served at the same time.

Sarah McBride, Delaware at-large congressional district

Democratic Senator Sarah McBride will be the first transgender person to serve in Congress.

McBride said CBS News said this monumental turning point in history is “a testament to Delawareans that running for someone like me is even possible.” However, McBride said becoming the first transgender member of Congress was not the goal. Rather, it’s about promoting affordable child care, reproductive freedom and affordable housing — typical Democratic positions in the 2024 cycle.

McBride will fill Blunt Rochester’s vacant House seat.

Julie Johnson, Texas’ 32nd Congressional District

Rep.-elect Julie Johnson won her race to succeed Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX) in Texas’ 32nd Congressional District, paving the way for her to become the first openly gay representative in the Texas delegation and the first openly gay representative Southern gay. .

“Don’t hold back,” Johnson wrote in an article about X. “Don’t assume you can or can’t do something. Don’t be your own obstacle to achieving your dreams. Go ahead, work hard, and you never know, you might just win.

Andy Kim, New Jersey Senate race

Representative Andy Kim (D-NJ) will be the first Korean American to serve in the Senate thanks to his victory over Republican candidate Curtis Bashaw. Kim, the son of immigrants, is 42 years old and will be the third youngest member of the Upper House in 2025.

Kim will fill the seat previously held by Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez, who resigned after being convicted of taking bribes and acting as a foreign agent. He defeated New Jersey’s first lady, Tammy Murphy, ending the long-standing political power of both parties in the state.

Bernie Moreno, Ohio Senate race

Businessman Bernie Moreno defeated Longtime incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) entered Ohio’s competitive Senate race, becoming the Buckeye State’s first Hispanic official.

He will also be the first senator born in South America.

Moreno’s victory was one of the few upsets of election night, with polls showing him deadlocked or trailing Brown. It was one of the costliest Senate races this cycle, with $400 million pumped into the race.
