Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Not Limited in Practice After Ankle Injury, Expected to Start Against Broncos (Video)

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won’t be limited in practice this week after briefly suffering what looked like a potentially scary injury late in their win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.

Mahomes, who first injured his ankle in Week 8, further aggravated the injury during their 30-24 overtime win against the Buccaneers at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday. Mahomes, while throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to Samaje Perine early in the fourth quarter, suddenly stopped awkwardly and started jumping, obviously in great pain. He also wasn’t hit by a defender on the play and had to be helped off the field.

Mahomes, however, was checked on the sideline and returned for his next practice without missing a single play. He then went on a game-winning sequence in overtime to push the Chiefs to a six-point victory and a perfect 8- 0.

Now that he’s days removed from his injury, Mahomes said he’s in a good place heading into Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos. Head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that they “won’t have to back up at all” Mahomes’ ankle and that he won’t be limited in practice this week. So, barring any setbacks or issues in the coming days, Mahomes should start.

“When you roll a little bit, it’s a little sore,” Mahomes said Wednesday of his ankle, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “But I’m able to move around and I’m looking forward to training and seeing how I can go further as the week goes on.”

Mahomes went 34 of 44 for 291 yards and threw three touchdowns in Monday’s win. He has totaled 1,942 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions this season. The Chiefs, who are the league’s only undefeated team, will host the Broncos on Sunday before traveling to New York to face the Buffalo Bills next weekend.
