Swinney provides injury update, works on field goal blocks, counts snaps for OL

Injuries and special teams work dominated the conversation after Wednesday’s practice.

Head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media to discuss the week and this Saturday’s trip to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech.

It started with updates on Pierre Bois and Tre Williams, injured in the loss to Louisville.

“Just a little better every day.” It’s still only Wednesday so they’ve been making a little bit of progress every day,” Swinney said. “So we have a few days left before we have to go. We leave here Friday morning, so every day will help us. Every minute. So they are progressing quite well.

He said Harris Sewell I ended up playing more snaps than Walker Parks at right guard on Saturday for a reason.

“We have Walker on a small number of throws. It’s late in the season and he’s got a lot of things to sort out,” Swinney said. “And Harris deserves to play, so anything more than that probably didn’t work with the show he was in.”

On shopping cart blocking issues

“I’m just trying to make sure we have the right personnel with what we have, the players we’re working with, and then trying to do a better job of coaching and teaching the technique and fundamentals that we need to execute. So that’s the bottom line.

What caused Woods’ injury

“It was a blockage with the guy. He kind of hit him on the top of the head. It was really dangerous when the guy hit him. It hit him a little, so he tried to keep going for a bit, but he just didn’t feel right.

“We have good players there. We love our staff. We are always evaluating. We have some kids that we think will be really good. They just need a little time in the program. A kid like Ricardo (Jones), we are really, really attached to him, excited about his future. We just need to be a little more persistent. Tyler (Venables) gives us a lot of knowledge and wisdom and he can definitely play multiple positions for us, but we just have to be as consistent as possible with whoever it is. But what really matters is who we play, what their personnel is, what their style of play is. All of those things kind of dictate, week in and week out, how we position our guys.

In practice this week

“It’s been really good. Two good days. I mean, Monday was a tough day. It’s the first day we’re with the players, but they responded and had a very good physical training yesterday and today, so they did a good job.
