Trump must work to unify the United States and earn public trust

One of the most intense election campaigns is now behind us, and our congratulations go to newly re-elected president Donald Trump.

These elections covered a wide range of issues at the national and state levels, with each candidate crafting their message to directly appeal to what each voter wanted to hear.

As is often the case in election campaigns, each candidate emphasized his strengths rather than his opponent’s weaknesses, promising mountains of achievements if he won the public’s trust.

Trump has indeed earned that trust, with voters supporting him and what he stands for – for better or worse. Media attention has focused heavily on his personality and his first term, including his refusal to accept the election results following his defeat to President Joe Biden in 2020. Thus, it would be difficult to argue that the America voted for “the unknown”.

Trump and his administration now face significant challenges in foreign policy, economics and national security. However, if Trump wants to be remembered as an extraordinary president, he must recognize that a significant portion of Americans distrust him and his future administration.

This election highlighted Americans’ lack of enthusiasm for both candidates, with more than 20% of voters expressing a strong dislike for both options. This harsh reality reflects a deep political division and near-resignation among moderate voters on both sides.

Additionally, Trump’s political style often focuses on a narrative of victimhood. His opponent, Kamala Harristried to respond with a message of hope, aiming to unite people around positive aspirations.

The collapse of the Center

Yet at one point she took a “just not Trump” approach. This phenomenon testifies to the erosion of the political center.

Democrats failed to defeat such a polarizing candidate because they failed to offer a positive, hopeful alternative — another sign of the Center’s collapse.

If Trump seeks to bring meaningful change to the United States, he must earn the public’s trust. Although I am hardly in a position to advise him, Trump is surrounded by competent advisers who understand the issues on the table and know what Americans want to see resolved immediately.

Yet the first step to solidifying his leadership is building trust as president with as many Americans as possible (it’s not realistic to say he will please everyone). With a strong and significant base of support, Trump will be better positioned to advance his goals.

To start, it might consider focusing on issues with cross-party consensus, thereby laying the foundation for building trust at all levels.

With gradual confidence building, Trump could then implement larger, more ambitious plans for the United States.
