Democrat Graham wins 35th SC Senate seat to succeed McElveen

Staff report

According to unofficial numbers, Democrat Jeffrey Graham secured the state senator position for District 35 after all precincts were reported Wednesday afternoon.

The district covers parts of Sumter, Lee, Kershaw and Richland counties. Graham, a Camden resident, received 52.15 percent of the vote, or 25,199 votes, over Republican opponent Mike Jones, who received 47.69 percent, or 23,044 votes. There were 17 written entries.

Sumter County supported Graham 56.04%, or 9,951 votes, compared to voters who chose Jones 43.81%, or 7,779 votes.

Lee County supported Jones 56.8%, or 1,834 votes, compared to voters who chose Graham 43.11%, or 1,392 votes.

The results are not official until they are certified later this week.

The candidates were vying to succeed Sen. Thomas McElveen, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election to a fourth term. When he first ran and won in 2012, he was South Carolina’s youngest senator at the time.
