Marquette Police Department offers to check vacant homes

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – If you’re leaving your home for a while this winter, the Marquette Police Department is here to check on your vacant home.

In addition to making sure you have good locks on doors and windows, Captain James Finkbeiner of the Marquette Police Department says you can have an officer watch the property.

He says they will set up a schedule with people and visit their homes several times a week. An officer will make sure the doors are locked and nothing is broken or taken. They will also contact the owners if anything goes wrong.

“Well, there are a number of residents who will be gone for months, you know, for most of the winter, but there are people who will be gone for a few weeks or something,” said Finkbeiner. “We are more than happy to come check out these residences.”

He says the service has been around for a long time and is offered year-round to Marquette residents. He says it’s meant to give people some peace of mind.

Interested people can fill out a vacant accommodation form on the city’s website or call the department at 906-228-0400 to request records.
