Violators owe RM6.5 billion for unpaid summons, says Bukit Aman

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 43.5 million traffic summons, worth RM6.5 billion, remain unpaid nationwide, Bukit Aman said.

This is a total of 135.9 million summons totaling RM20.3 billion issued for traffic offenses from 1990 to date, said Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director , Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri (photo).

“The majority of summonses have been settled while 43.5 million remain unpaid on Wednesday November 6,” he told journalists Thursday November 7 after visiting the municipal headquarters of the department.

A five-day 50% reduction campaign on road surcharges is on offer in Kuala Lumpur until Saturday 9 November.

So far this year, 4.3 million road summonses have been issued nationwide, worth RM646.1 million, Commissioner Yusri said.

“Most of the offenses concern obstruction of traffic and failure to obey traffic signs,” he added, noting that 881,211 summonses were issued in the city alone.

“This is quite high considering the number of control operations carried out throughout the year,” he said.
