ForbesToday’s word 1236, tips, clues and answers for Wednesday, November 5

It’s Thor Day, and those of you who aren’t yet hungover from this week’s big election are probably distracting yourself with more entertaining things, like games and puzzles. Wordle, apparently. In any case, yesterday I gave you a particular challenge. Today I will reveal the answer.

Here is yesterday’s riddle:

Four animals must cross a dangerous bridge at night. They only have one flashlight and the bridge is too dangerous to cross without it. The bridge can only accommodate two people at a time, and each person walks at a different speed:

  • Mr. Fox takes 1 minute to cross.
  • Mrs. Alligator it takes 2 minutes to cross.
  • Mr. Orangutan takes 5 minutes to cross.
  • Ms. Paresse it takes 10 minutes to cross.

If two animals cross paths, they must move at the pace of the slower animal. The goal is for everyone to cross the bridge in 17 minutes or less. How do they do it?

The solution:

  • Mr. Fox and Ms. Alligator cross first. It takes 2 minutes.
  • Mr. Fox returns. It takes 1 minute. 3 minutes have now passed.
  • Mr. Orangutan and Ms. Sloth cross paths, which takes 10 minutes. 13 minutes have now passed.
  • Mrs. Alligator returns, taking 2 minutes. 15 minutes have now passed.
  • Eventually, Mr. Fox and Ms. Alligator cross paths, taking another 2 minutes to a total of 17 minutes.

I guessed to VOTE for obvious reasons, and it turned out to be pretty lucky. There were only 3 words left! EVICT, which also seems timely in its own weird way, left me with just one: EVENT for the win! Well, that’s pretty fitting. . . .

The etymology of today’s words

The word event dates back to Latin origins. It comes from the Latin word eventmeaning “result, event or accident”, which in turn is derived from the verb eveningmeaning “to come out, occur or result”. Evening itself is made up of ex- (“out of”) and come (“future”).

The term spread in Middle French as eventretaining the meaning of something happening or taking place, especially as a result or outcome. In English, event took on its modern meaning in the late 16th century, meaning a notable event or event, often with a sense of significance.
