Chinese hackers who exploited Verizon’s system targeted phones used by people affiliated with Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ campaign, a person familiar with the matter said Friday.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, were also targeted, according to media reports. Reuters could not confirm this information.

The New York Times reported that investigators were working to determine what, if any, communications were confiscated from Trump and Vance.

The Times report adds that the Trump campaign was informed this week that Trump and Vance were among a number of people inside and outside the government whose phone numbers were targeted by the infiltration of Verizon phone systems.

The Trump campaign has not confirmed that Trump and Vance’s phones were targeted.

Steven Cheung, campaign communications director, said Vice President Harris encouraged China and Iran to attack U.S. infrastructure to prevent Trump from returning to power.

While noting that it was not aware of the specific situation, the Chinese Embassy in Washington said China opposes and combats cyber attacks and cyber thefts in all their forms.

“Presidential elections are the internal affairs of the United States. China has no intentions and will not interfere in the US elections,” an embassy spokesperson said when contacted for comment.

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
