President Biden will address the nation after Trump’s election victory

US President Joe Biden is preparing to address the nation on Thursday after a crushing electoral defeat for his Democratic Party at the hands of Republican Donald Trump, whose stunning political comeback has reverberated around the world.

Biden, who was replaced in July as the Democratic nominee in the race by Vice President Kamala Harris due to concerns about his mental acuity after a tough debate with Trump, he will address the nation, the White House said.

Harris sought Wednesday to console voters who hoped she would become the first woman to win the White House. Like Biden, she promised to help Trump with the transition between now and his inauguration on Jan. 20, but said she was not ready to embrace his vision for the country.

Trump’s campaign said Biden invited him to a meeting at the White House at an unspecified time.

Victory for former President Trumpsurprisingly decisive after opinion polls that had shown a neck-and-neck race ahead of Tuesday’s election, underlined how disillusioned Americans had become with the economy – particularly the effect of the inflation on their standard of living – border security and the direction of government. country and its culture.

Hispanics, traditionally Democratic voters and low-income households hit hardest by inflation helped fuel the victory. Harris’ campaign had sought to send the message that Trump was unfit to serve as president again, as a convicted felon whose false claims of voter fraud after his 2020 election defeat prompted a mob to storm the US Capitol.

This time, Trump gained the upper hand in five of the seven battleground states, allowing him to surpass the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency, and was ahead in the other two states, Arizona and Nevada , where votes were still being counted.

He was also on track to become the first Republican presidential candidate to win the popular vote since George W. Bush two decades ago.

Republicans wrested control of the US Senate from Democrats, ensuring that Trump will control at least one chamber of Congress next year. It is unclear whether they will retain their majority in the US House of Representatives, with dozens of elections yet to be called.

US stocks rebounded to close at record highs on Wednesday following Trump’s victory, with investors expecting lower taxes, deregulation and a US president who isn’t shy about weighing in on everything from the stock market to the dollar. However, new tariffs could pose problems in the form of a higher deficit and inflation.
