The port of entry was reopened Wednesday evening but has since been closed again.

The border was closed for security reasons following post-election unrest in the neighboring country.

BMA National Commissioner Michael Masiapato briefed the media on Thursday.

Masiapato said the border on the Mozambique side (Ressano Garcia) is also closed.

“Yesterday it was a partial opening, now it is a real closure. We cannot allow anyone to cross the border into Mozambique. We cannot allow any truck or even a normal vehicle to cross the border into Mozambique because on that side they have completely closed,” he explained.

“When we say that South Africa closed Lebombo, it is not just a South African decision. It is the result of the closure of Ressano Garcia.

“Once they close, because they can’t process, we can’t process. Once the next country closes the border, you can’t do anything. On your side, you are forced to close too “, he added.

Masiapato confirmed that the BMA had released trucks carrying perishable goods and fuel.

The line of trucks waiting to cross the border is estimated at 15 kilometers.

At least one person was arrested for public violence.
