Here are the global cloud market shares for the third quarter of 2024, with AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud, Alibaba and Oracle among the top five.


Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google together accounted for 68% of the $84 billion. global cloud market in the third quarter of 2024.

AWS, Google Cloud And Microsoft have been battling for years for leadership in the massive global cloud market, whose total revenue exceeded $313 billion over the past 12 months, according to new market research from Synergy Research Group.

“In the last four quarters, the market grew by almost $16 billion, while in the previous four quarters the corresponding figure was $10 billion. Given the already massive size of the market, we see an impressive growth spurt,” said John Dinsdale, chief analyst at Synergy Research Group, in an email to CRN.

The top five in the world cloud market leaders are AWS, Alibaba, Google Cloud, Microsoft and Oracle.

$84 billion cloud market, AI a “primary factor” for growth

Enterprise spending on cloud infrastructure services reached $84 billion in the third quarter of 2024, an increase of approximately $16 billion, or 23% year-over-year.

“While some market headwinds have eased, it is undoubtedly AI that is one of the key factors driving this increased growth rate. Among the top five global leaders in terms of market share is Oracle, which took 3% of the cloud infrastructure services market share.

Austin, Texas-based Oracle gained 1 point of market share year-over-year, compared to Oracle’s 2% in the third quarter of 2023.

For Oracle’s most recent financial results for the first quarter of 2025, the company reported total revenue of $13.3 billion, up 7% year-over-year. Cloud service sales increased 21% year-over-year to $5.6 billion.


No. 4: Alibaba

The Chinese cloud giant gained 4% share of the global cloud market during the third quarter of 2024, representing stable year-over-year growth.

Alibaba’s market share reached 6% in the fourth quarter of 2021, but has slowly declined over the years. The Hangzhou, China-based company now captures about 4% of the market share each quarter.

For Alibaba’s first quarter of fiscal 2025, the company reported total revenue of $33.5 billion, an increase of 4% year-over-year. Alibaba’s Cloud Intelligence Group generated revenue of $3.65 billion, up 6% year-over-year.


No. 3: Google Cloud

Google Cloud generated $11.4 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2024, representing a 35% year-over-year increase.

This momentum helped Google Cloud achieve a record global market share of 13% in Q3 2024, up 2 points from 11% market share in Q3 2023.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based cloud giant has been steadily gaining market share globally in recent years. For example, in the fourth quarter of 2017, Google Cloud’s market share was only 6%.


No. 2: Microsoft

Microsoft ranked second in global market share capturing 20 percent share.

Synergy said it recently changed the way Microsoft Azure revenue is classified. Some Azure revenues were restated as SaaS rather than IaaS or PaaS. This reduced Microsoft’s market share for cloud infrastructure services, but increased its SaaS market share.

It’s critical to note that Microsoft doesn’t publicly provide exact Azure revenue numbers. Instead, the company includes Azure sales alongside revenue from server products and other cloud services as part of Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud business unit.

Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud business generated revenue of $24.1 billion in the third quarter of 2024, up 20% year-over-year.


No. 1: AWS

Third quarter 2023 market share: 32%

AWS remains the dominant global market share leader in cloud computing, and has been for over a decade. AWS has typically achieved between 31% and 33% global market share each quarter for the past several years.

The Seattle-based cloud giant won 31% share of the global cloud infrastructure services market during the third quarter of 2024, down 1 point from 32% share year-over-year.

AWS generated $27.5 billion in total sales in Q3 2024, representing a year-over-year growth rate of 19%.


Other leaders in terms of market share

Salesforce market share in Q3 2024: 2%

IBM market share in the third quarter of 2024: 2%

Tencent market share in the third quarter of 2024: 2%

Huawei market share in the third quarter of 2024: 2%

Several companies are jostling to be among the five leaders in terms of market share. Salesforce, IBM, Tencent and Huawei all generated around 2% global market share.

Other companies with a 1% market share include Akamai, Baidu, China Telecom, China Unicom, Fujitsu, NTT, Snowflake, SAP and VMware.
