Danielle Fishel Reflects on 25th Wedding Anniversary Boy Meets World

It’s been 25 years since A boy meets the worldCory and Topanga got married on the show – and Danielle Fishel still remembers the hype surrounding the big day.

As A boy meets the world fans will recall, Fishel’s character, Topanga Lawrence, proposed to her high school friend Cory Matthews (played by Ben Savage) during the season 5 finale of the series in May 1998. Fresh out of high school, the two characters spent the sixth season of the series engaged before getting married at the start of the seventh and final season, on November 5, 1999 .

In an interview with TV line On November 5, 2024, Fishel, 43, said: “I can’t believe I’ve been married for 25 years.”

Still, Fishel remembers the importance of weddings at the time.

“I remember it was a big deal that Cory and Topanga got married. I remember they made a website,” she told TVLine. “The Internet still seemed very new, and you could go to this website and ABC did a poll (asking fans if Cory and Topanga should get married).”

In June, Fishel reflected on why the fictional couple’s relationship resonated so strongly with so many people, saying in an episode of his must-watch podcast Pod meets the world that the couple really seemed to love each other.

“Just to see teenagers who love each other win and have it taken seriously,” Fishel said. “When you’re a teenager, everyone tells you, ‘You don’t know what love is,’ and you just want someone to say, ‘Maybe you do.’ Maybe it’s real. Maybe you’re right and it’s forever and we’re wrong. »

Yet in a conversation with PEOPLE during the ’90s conference in early 2024, Fishel shared that she thought Cory and Topanga were too young to get married.

“Yes! Of course we were,” she replied when asked. “Now it worked for them, and kudos to them, and there will always be those success stories. There are success stories, but I would say that, overall, getting married right out of high school n ‘is not generally ideal.
