“The situation is not in favor of Ukraine and the West is faced with a choice,” Sergei Shoigu, secretary of the Russian National Security Council, said at a meeting on the security of the independent Union in Moscow, Russia, at 7 local time.

“We must continue to support Ukraine and destroy the Ukrainian population, or else wake up to the current reality and start negotiations,” he said.

The remarks are notable as a senior Russian official has publicly discussed the negotiations since Trump, who pledged to end the situation in Ukraine, was elected president of the United States.

Shoigu served as Russian defense minister from 2012 until May.

Shoigu also said that Ukraine had attempted to commit nuclear terrorism by targeting the Kursk and Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants, and that Russia considered the Ukrainian regime a terrorist.

Recently, Russian forces focused on advancing into eastern Ukraine announced they had captured Kreminna Balka, a small town in Donetsk.
