Authorities shut down allegedly illegal dumpster business of Gerke Waste Management

An allegedly illegal skip business operating in Tasmania’s north-east without the proper permits has been shut down by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

Scottsdale-based Gerke Waste Management is accused of illegally dumping waste on city property for years, without necessary permits from the council and EPA.

EPA Director and CEO Wes Ford said an Environmental Protection Notice (EPN) was issued Tuesday.

This means that Gerke Waste Management must immediately stop disposing of waste on the property and cannot touch waste already deposited there.

“In addition to stopping unauthorized activity, the EPN will also allow the EPA to undertake a detailed investigation into what was deposited at the site,” Ford said.

“Illegal disposal of waste can have significant consequences on the environment and public health. »

If illegal dumping is confirmed, offenders could receive a waste abatement notice, requiring them to clean up the mess at their own expense.

“Dumpster users can reasonably expect their waste to be disposed of legally,” Ford said.

“EPA encourages companies using these services to ensure that the contractors they deal with hold the appropriate approvals and bring their waste to permitted facilities.”
