Historically, prepaid carriers have not offered some of the additional benefits offered by major carriers’ postpaid plans, including international roaming features. Fortunately, this has changed in recent years and we are slowly starting to see more prepaid options offering international service either as an add-on or as a free benefit. Mint Mobile is one of the carriers offering basic international support, but does Mint Mobile work in Canada? The short answer is yes.

The long answer is also yes, but there are a few small issues that sometimes trip people up that we’ll walk you through how to fix so you can take full advantage of this feature.

Don’t have Mint Mobile but want to give it a chance? Right now, it’s a good time to register. You even have the possibility to a 7-day free trial. Need a new device? Right now, Mint Mobile is offering the Pixel 9 with one year of free service for just $399. This is beyond a good deal!

Mint Mobile includes free roaming in Canada on all its plans

Mint Mobile recently rolled out its free roaming feature in Canada in July 2024. This new feature is included with all Mint Mobile plans at no additional cost. Regardless of your specific Mint Mobile plan, you’ll get 3GB of monthly high-speed data specifically for use in Canada, meaning it doesn’t count against your existing data allowance. As you would expect, you also get unlimited calls and texts.

Are you located in Canada and want to carefully monitor your usage to make sure you don’t miss out on data? Mint mobile makes it easy. Simply access your account at my.mintmobile.com and find the Add-ons sidebar, then select Free roaming in Canada. You will see a graph showing how much data you currently have. You will also have the option to purchase additional data.

How much does additional Mint Mobile data cost in Canada?

If you use your allotted 3GB of data, you will have the option to purchase one of the following data plans:

  • 1 GB for $5
  • 3 GB for $10
  • 10 GB for $20

Please note that you cannot add more data until you have used at least 80% of existing Canadian roaming data. Data add-ons also expire at the end of the month, whether you’ve used them completely or not.

While Mint Mobile’s free Canada roaming feature is a great addition, it doesn’t take long to find people on Reddit unhappy that they can’t make the data work. However, for some of them, calls and texts usually seem to work just fine. So what’s the problem? While some users will have no problem getting their data to work in Canada, if you run into a problem, chances are there are two possible reasons.

First of all, it’s very possible that data roaming isn’t enabled by default on your phone. Exact instructions vary depending on the device.

For iPhone users: For iPhone users, you will want to go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and tap the slider next to Data roaming.

For Galaxy users: For Galaxy users, you will want to go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks and press the Data roaming to light up.

For Pixel users: For Pixel users, you’ll want to go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIM > Mint Mobile then press the Roaming switch to turn it on.

Do you have a different brand of Android device than Samsung or Google? Chances are your phone uses the same general steps as Google’s Pixel, so it’s worth checking. Otherwise, you’ll want to search for your specific device for instructions.

Data roaming is already activated and yet you still encounter a problem?

If you have an Android device, you may need to manually enter the correct AP settings. This isn’t a common problem because your phone should already be properly set up for Mint Mobile before you arrive in Canada, but it could resolve the issue if it has issues after landing.

The exact steps may vary depending on your phone, but the easiest is to type Access point names in the Settings search bar. From there, you’ll see Mint Mobile listed as one of the options and there should be some sort of plus button or other toggle that allows you to manually add APN settings.

You should see a list of settings including name, APN, proxy, port, etc. Here’s exactly what you need to enter manually for each field:

  • Name – Mint
  • APN – Wholesale
  • Agent – (leave blank)
  • Port – (leave blank)
