Great Meadow Correctional Institution in Washington County has officially closed its doors and its employees have moved elsewhere.

The facility closed Wednesday, the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision told NewsChannel 13.

The neighboring Washington Correctional Center will monitor the property, they said.

Utilities will be shut off and buildings will be boarded up and boarded up, according to the Department of Corrections.

NewsChannel 13 asked the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision on Thursday how many Great Meadow staff members had accepted jobs at other prisons around the state. They told us they were only required to share this information with the Legislature within 60 days of closing.

The state announced in July that Great Meadow was one of two prisons that close to save money.
