More voters see Trump as the candidate for change: exit-poll analysis

Claiming superior leadership and presenting himself as the true agent of change were the keys to Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election, according to ABC News poll results.

It also largely prevailed among the small group of so-called “double haters,” that is, voters with unfavorable views of both candidates.

In a list of four candidate qualities, 30 percent of voters nationally rated “has the ability to lead” as most important to their vote, and about as many, or 28 percent, chose “can bring about change necessary “. Fewer respondents chose “has good judgment” (20%) or “cares about people like me” (18%).

Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and President-elect Donald Trump.

P.A.

These choices were closely linked to the candidates’ preferences. Among those who cited leadership ability as the candidate’s top quality, Trump defeated Kamala Harris 2-1, 66-33 percent. By making changes, the gap widened to 3-1, or 74-24%.

This huge gap in change reflects Harris’s struggles to distance herself from the unpopular Biden administration, a dynamic covered in the ABC News/Ipsos pre-election poll. Seventy-four percent of Americans said they want Harris, if elected, to take a new direction from President Joe Biden. Only 33% thought she would.

Harris fought back with a large lead among voters who chose judgment or empathy as most important — but there were fewer of them.

On the other hand, among Trump supporters, 41% chose “can bring about needed change” as the candidate’s most important attribute in their vote and 40% chose leadership, a total of eight voters out of ten.

In contrast, about six in ten Harris supporters chose judgment or kindness as their top qualities. Compared to Trump, half as many cited leadership and a third cited the ability to bring about change.

Personal preference was another factor.

In 2020, Biden was viewed favorably by 52%, 6 percentage points above Trump’s 46%. This year, Harris ended up being rated essentially as unfavorably as Trump — 47 to 52 percent, favorable-unfavorable, for Harris, and 46 to 53 percent for Trump. (This is a change from preliminary exit poll results, in which Trump was favored by 11 points, to Harris’s just 2 points.)

Trump notably won the 8% of voters who rated both candidates unfavorably, by 26 points, or 56 to 30%.

Also look at the ratings of how extreme the candidates’ views are: 47% said Harris’s views were too extreme; 54% said this of Trump. But among those who said both were too extreme, again 8 percent of voters, Trump won by a wide margin of 42 points, or 63 to 21 percent.
