New York police search for gunman who injured man before fleeing on subway

NEW YORK — Police were searching Thursday for a man they say shot and killed another man on a Manhattan street before fleeing into the city’s sprawling subway system, causing delays on the morning commute.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. on the Upper West Side. The 47-year-old victim was shot in the leg and shoulder and remains hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

The shooter fled toward the nearby 72nd Street subway station.

Police responding to the shooting ordered hangers placed on the subway floor and sheltering in place while they searched for the suspect. They also cut off the electricity at the station and stopped the trains.

The search affected C train service, which resumed with delays after being suspended in both directions.

Police have not released the names of the suspected shooter or victim. They also declined to say whether they knew each other or what might have sparked the shooting.
