Why the vote count on sports games in Missouri caused some confusion

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Missouri Amendment 2, which legalized sports gambling, narrowly passed.

Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft’s office acknowledged the confusion in the vote count. Election officials say a few counties made errors when entering the numbers Tuesday. The secretary of state’s office corrected those errors Wednesday. However, these changes did not impact its adoption.

Although the count is ongoing, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft said the lead in favor of sports betting is unlikely to change.

“We haven’t certified everything, but we’re looking into it now,” Ashcroft said. “We are dealing with a difference of less than 10,000 votes. I wouldn’t expect to see a change of this magnitude one way or the other during the certification process. That would just be an incredibly important thing.

Ashcroft says his office has until the second week of December to certify the results.
