TG Readers Voted the Corvette ZR1 as the Best Performance Car of 2024

Question of the week

Cheers for a few other V8s, like the Vantage, 750S and swansong F-Type

Published: November 8, 2024

It has been a relatively quiet year for performance carsbut that doesn’t mean there aren’t some worth mentioning, and that’s exactly what we wanted to know from you all: which one was the best of 2024?

Let’s start with Paul Esthete’s comment, the most voted last week: “Corvette C8 ZR1: Thunderous V8, not a drop of EV nonsense and over a thousand horsepower. It’s a fast 233 mph hypercar, and it’s up to you whether you want to spec it with or without the wacky aero package, unlike the previous generation. There’s also no limited production or guest list requirement, so Chevy can build as many as people want. It’s not going to get much better, especially in 2024.”

Staying with the United States of America for the next one, here’s Al Kim’s vote: “Since we’re allowing facelifts to enter as new cars for 2024, I’m going to take a risk with the Cadillac CT5 Blackwing. It doesn’t move me as much as an old CTS-V wagon, and I’m torn to pieces waving my flag for such a dinosaur, but I’ll be angry if an old-school American V8 isn’t a one welcome breath of fresh air.

American V8s weren’t the only eight-cylinders to be recognized in 2024, as Rover Official wrote: “My vote is for the final edition of the Jaguar F-Typethe R75. It’s something more than a car and could be considered the last “real” Jag, especially now that the entire range is being wiped out by electric vehicles. It’s a worthwhile finale, especially since a car that costs 20 times more than a vehicle like this can never be 20 times more fun.

A few more Britons were named, such as Aston’s big facelift for the Vantage. Sideways 720s said: “This is an impressive redesign of an existing car, taking it from an afterthought to a truly unique competitor. And, strangely, showing Mercedes using its own engine after that is hopeless Second generation AMG GT.”

And that was also the case the McLaren 750S from Unicyclist Periscopes: “I would imagine it would be at or near the top of the three. It outperformed rival Ferrari in TG testing and moved McLaren supercars ahead in performance. I like the look, which probably puts me in the minority of commenters on this site, so I’m glad it doesn’t stray from the company’s aesthetic. And you can probably get one without spending tens of thousands of dollars above list price.

Is anyone in favor of a few left-field picks to wrap things up? Mr. T-Bird said: “The AGTZ Double Tail gets my vote. Zagato has done a good job paying homage to the A220, and in a world where even supercars look so much like their internal siblings, it’s a welcome change. Even though it is heavily based on the A110.

Last but not least, MJCgt500, which added a car we really like: “The AC Cobra GT roadster is everything you could want: a naturally aspirated V8, more than 400 hp sent to the rear wheels and infinite headroom. Optional racing strips for more power too. His decision not only holds up, but beats everything 2024 has to offer.

A brilliant selection of comments to choose from once again. The next one falls on Monday as usual and can once again have something to do with 2024 performance cars.
