Newcastle United podcast: Michael Chopra on his goal against Sunderland

“I’m a Geordie, these games mean a lot to me.”

Michael Chopra’s reaction to former Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder urging him to come on as a substitute against Sunderland sums up how he felt about the opportunity.

In fact, the Newcastle-born striker scored his only Premier League goal for the Magpies at the Stadium of Light, playing his part in a memorable 4-1 victory.

He told BBC Radio Newcastle’s Total Sport podcast what it meant to him.

“As a Geordie you dream of playing in these games, but to score in just one…

“I remember being in the dressing room, we were 1-0 down at half-time and Glenn Roeder came up to me and said ‘you could continue if it stays like this – make sure you’re ready ‘. I was like, ‘Don’t worry, I’m ready.’

“He put it on me and Titus (Bramble) took a free kick on the edge of the halfway line. I had just run from the dugout straight into the box and the ball fell to me and I put it in bottom of the surface.

“I was straight to Newcastle afterwards – I don’t think I had to buy a drink!”

Chopra would later play for Sunderland, scoring 42 times in eight appearances for local rivals Newcastle.
