Officials provide update on investigation

(WHTM) – The Chester County District Attorney’s Office has placed its investigation into the 2011 death of Ellen Greenberg on inactive status due to an inability to prove a crime was committed.

The prosecutor’s office says it cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime was committed based on the current state of the investigation. Since there is no statute of limitations on criminal homicides in Pennsylvania, the prosecutor’s office will not close the case.

On September 26, 2011, Greenberg, 27, was found dead by her fiancé in the kitchen of her Philadelphia residence, with multiple stab wounds to her upper back and neck. Local police and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office investigated the case, and after an autopsy, it was ruled a homicide. But the ruling was changed to suicide by the Philadelphia medical examiner’s office shortly afterward.

The Ellen Greenberg case gained statewide media coverage after the ruling on Greenberg’s death was changed from homicide to suicide.

In 2018, the investigation was turned over to the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Office. Greenberg’s parents have publicly stated that they want justice for their daughter’s murder and that she would never harm herself or anyone else.

To avoid a conflict of interest, the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Office turned the case over to Chester County detectives in 2022, the Chester County Attorney’s Office said.

After a thorough review to determine whether there was sufficient evidence to reopen the investigation, detectives concluded that they were unable to pursue criminal charges and the investigation was now inactive.
