Bad intention unlikely in pipe bomb incident

HARBOR SPRINGS — Michigan State Police have released a pipe bomb found at a Harbor Springs thrift store Wednesday afternoon.

Carol Grissom, manager of the New Beginnings thrift store, said an employee was sorting merchandise when she found an item that seemed odd. After talking with another employee, they decided to call the police, believing they had found a pipe bomb.

Michigan State Police responded to the call and requested that the building be evacuated for safety reasons. Subsequently, the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad arrived on scene, as did the Michigan State Police Canine Unit.

Police used an X-ray to determine that one of the two pipe bombs contained a fuse and powder.

Grissom said the store was receiving many deliveries from a larger truck, so there was no way of knowing who might have donated the item. She said police had indicated there was no reason to believe there was any malicious intent.

Once the items are donated, the boxes are sorted by department before being examined and sent upstairs.

Grissom was not at the store when the pipe bomb was found, but he returned to see that people had been evacuated.

She said staff are trained for fire evacuation, but the store did not have a plan for this type of incident as it was a first of its kind for them.

“They were very professional. They didn’t waste time wondering if it was real or not,” Grissom said of his employees, who called the police. “It was like, ‘Let’s be safe. Let’s be safe and we’ll ask questions when the police come.'”

While concerned about the discovery, Grissom said there was likely no malicious intent and that what happened was someone was clearing out an old garage, throwing out items they wanted dispose of in the box without looking too closely.
