A 16-year-old inmate at a Greeley youth detention center died Tuesday after being in intensive care for the past month.

Authorities have not said how the teen died, calling it only a “medical emergency.”

On Oct. 21, police responded to the Plate Valley Youth Services Center for reports of a drug smuggling offense at the facility, police said in a news release.

Detention center staff told police they found the teenager unconscious in his cell at 6:48 a.m. He was taken to hospital.
