California Warns of Intoxicating Hemp Foods and Beverages Enticing Children

California is warning about intoxicating foods and drinks containing hemp, a form of cannabis, designed to appeal to children.

Hemp is believed to contain low amounts of THC, the active psychoactive in marijuana, but the California government has said products designed to look like Cheetos, Fruity Pebbles and Sour Patch Kids may contain intoxicating levels of the drug.

“Industrial hemp products designed to look like popular brands appeal to our most vulnerable – children and adolescents – and pose serious health risks that we must protect them from,” California Attorney General said , Rob Bonta. said Friday.

These hemp foods and drinks are often sold at gas stations, smoke shops and liquor stores, with advertising terms such as “medicated”, “THC” and “CBD”.

People who consume these products may experience effects such as difficulty breathing, lethargy, dizziness, nausea, and loss of coordination. Side effects of synthetic cannabinoids include rapid heart rate, agitation, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and psychosis, among others.

In September, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued emergency rules stating that industrial hemp food, beverage and dietary supplement products that do not contain detectable THC per serving cannot be sold to persons of under 21 years of age and contain no more than five servings per package.
