Emery Cappallo and Monomoy rally in field hockey to beat Cohasset in overtime

When the chips were down, Monomoy sophomore Emery Cappallo had another breakthrough moment to offer.

Cappallo scored the game-winner on a penalty shot with 8:46 left in overtime to lift second-seeded Monomoy to a 2-1 win over No. 7 Cohasset in a quarterfinal game Division 4 field hockey on Friday at Harwich.

Eighth-grader Mia Zimmerman took the crucial penalty for Monomoy (19-0-2) after being checked in front of the Cohasset net on a breakaway attempt. Cappallo rose to the occasion, sealing the victory after scoring a game-tying goal to erase Cohasset’s 1-0 lead with 11:24 left in the third quarter.

“Our team put in so much effort all season,” Cappallo said.

“I knew I had to do it and I had confidence in myself that I could do it. “It was truly a team effort. We spent so much time on it and we felt it was so great.

The win secured a fourth straight trip to the state semifinals for the Sharks, the defending state runners-up, who suffered a 4-0 loss to Uxbridge in last year’s final.

They will play No. 3 Sutton-No. 6 Lynnfield winner in semi-final (date/venue to be determined).

Cohasset (14-5-3) took a 1-0 lead after junior Kate Greer opened the scoring with 7:25 left in the first quarter.

Division 3 State

Sandwich 8, Dover-Sherborn 1 — Sophomore Sadie Clarkin scored a hat trick, junior Quinn Jordan scored twice and the top-seeded Blue Knights (23-0-0) beat the No. 9 Raiders (12-8 -1) in the quarter-finals.
