BSC Teacher Heads to Ultimate Frisbee World Championships

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – By day, Kim Kohler is an assistant professor of sociology at Bismarck State College, but by night, she’s an Ultimate Frisbee athlete.

Today, his hard work in his sport has paid off with the chance to compete for a world championship.

Kim Kohler takes part in last-minute training sessions. She is on her way to California to compete in the Ultimate Frisbee World Championships. Kohler will be part of the Canadian team in the Grand Masters division.

“I’m a little nervous,” she admitted.

Kohler is a team manager; she compares it to the quarterback of a football team.

“I’m running a lot less, making more big throws and controlling movement on the field,” Kohler said.

This will be his second participation in the Worlds. But it’s a first for his team, which had to deserve its place at the Worlds.

“You had to qualify. It was actually very important for Canada because we have never had a Grandmaster division for women at the national level,” she said.

Kohler launched its first frisbee more than 25 years ago. She’s been hooked ever since. She said it’s a non-traditional sport that’s all about playing fair.

“There are no referees. It’s a self-adjudication system,” Kohler explained.

Kohler said Ultimate Frisbee is a sport that anyone can play.

“There’s a role for everyone,” she said.

She hopes her role as manager could help her team win a championship.

The Masters Ultimate World Championships begin Sunday and continue through Saturday in Irvine, California.
