School identifies teen killed in house explosion; The NTSB is currently investigating

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — The 15-year-old boy killed in a house explosion this week in South Jordan has been identified by his school as Logan Hansen. Bingham High School shared Hansen’s name in a social media post to announce a vigil planned for Friday.

Local fire investigators determined that a natural gas leak was the cause of Wednesday’s explosion.

The vigil will take place at the school from 6:30 p.m., with a minute of silence at 7 p.m. Participants are asked to wear blue.

Also Friday, the National Transportation Safety Board said it was investigating the explosion, but did not provide additional details.

The day after the incident, the gravity of what happened in their yard began to sink in among the neighbors.

The raw video below shows the house explosion caught on camera:

“It’s just horrible devastation,” said neighbor Carol Lee Doramus, who lives a few blocks from the house.

Doramus said she heard a loud explosion and couldn’t imagine what it was until her daughter told her what happened.

“What strikes you is that the house… there isn’t one,” she added. “And I looked up there and it looks like a refrigerator up there on the pile. And I can’t imagine losing everything I own, my kids’ pictures, that kind of thing.”

A gas leak was determined to be the cause of the fire and explosion in an update from South Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner.

The origin of the leak is still under investigation.

Sami Davis says she worked for the family as a babysitter and nanny for nearly a decade.

“My mom called me and said there had been a fire or incident in this neighborhood and we knew the family lived there,” Davis said.

Davis said she and her mother went to where the house was.

“That’s when we realized this was the home of the family we knew and I knew,” Davis said.

Davis told FOX 13 News the 15-year-old boy who was killed was about two or three years old when she started working for the family.

“When he was little, he was happy and as a pre-teen, he was just a normal pre-teen, but also happy,” Davis said. “His personality was that he always wanted to laugh at things and he was still a kid, wasn’t he, like any other kid.”

Neighbors gathered around the boy’s family, some tying blue ribbons on a fence that now sits in front of where the house once stood.

“I couldn’t imagine that,” neighbor David Llewellyn said. “My heart, our hearts, my wife and I, go out to the family.”

As the sun set Thursday, blue lights could be seen on trees and nearby homes. We were told that blue was boys’ favorite color.

“We just dropped off a bunch of clothes for all the kids and the parents and we’re just trying to find things that can keep them warm,” Davis said.

For Davis, she discussed what makes her saddest about the tragic incident.

“I won’t be able to see those milestones, as he grows and gets older,” Davis said. “It also makes me sad for his family that won’t be able to be there and then for everyone whose lives might have been touched by his and, you know, like thinking about all the different friends that he could have made and I think he would have been a light in their lives.

FOX 13 News asked Davis Thursday if there was anything the family wanted her to share or say on their behalf.

She told us they just wanted their privacy respected at this time. Davis went on to say that the family is truly grateful for all the support and rallying around them from the community.

In a message from the city, Mayor Dawn Ramsey said the family requested privacy following the incident.

“Our community experienced an unimaginable tragedy with the death of one of our residents after the family home exploded yesterday,” Ramsey wrote. “Our hearts are broken as we grieve alongside family, friends, neighbors and all who mourn this devastating time.”

A GoFundMe page was created to help the family buy food and clothing, as well as cover funeral costs.

Heartbroken by what happened, those who live in the South Jordan neighborhood, like Doramus, believe they will all get through this week’s tragedy together.

“We have the most wonderful neighborhood I’ve ever lived in and I’ve been here a long time…people come and go but we’re always here to help.”

Enbridge Gas provided FOX 13 News with a statement regarding the incident:
